KAABOO Festival: Red Hot Chili Peppers Close Out Day One For The Perfect Start To The Weekend

KAABOO kicked off in the most fitting way as the Red Hot Chili Peppers shut down the opening day in their home state of California.

Music lovers around the world were able to join in on the party as the event was streamed live thanks to LiveList, KAABOO and MGM Resorts International.

Can’t stop, addicted to the shindig
Chop Top, he says I’m gonna win big

Anthony Kiedis belted these lyrics to the crowd during his energetic performance of “Can’t Stop”. Those addicted to the shindig but couldn’t make it to Del Mar enjoyed the party from home as thousands tuned in to comment on the live stream.

Fellow Californian rock band, Smash Mouth, got the live show going on the Grandview stage and warmed up the crowd with their greatest hits, including “I’m A Believer” and “All Star”. The Pacific sun shined on the jubilant crowd as shots of the coastal setting provided the perfect ambience for day one of KAABOO.

As the stages prepared for the next act, the programming continued during the intermissions as footage cut to show the other art forms being celebrated during the weekend. While the next act prepared, the cameras cut to former Top Chef finalist Kevin Gillespie, who gave his audience a cookery lesson and ran through his creative concepts. This was a great use of time and was something light for those watching at home to indulge in rather, than sitting around waiting for the next performance to begin.

The music soon returned with an archetypal, emotional performance by the legendary Dave Mason on the Trestles Stage. The Australian ran through renditions of the likes of “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “We Just Agree” before getting a standing ovation as the cameras cut to the the Sunset Cliffs stage where the X Ambassadors were beginning to perform.

The New Yorkers further displayed the show’s diversity with their modern touch before the show took a soulful turn with Michael McDonald wowing the viewers with his rhythm and blues influence. McDonald’s emotive vocals were provided with the most jazzy instrumentals with the saxophone, keyboard, drums and electric guitar, all combining to give those at home that speakeasy feel.

It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the East
At least it settles in the final location

These lyrics from “Californication” had never been more fitting as the sun finally had set on the West Coast for RHCP to blow the crowd, and those watching online, into a funk-filled frenzy. The chemistry between Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer and Flea was at an all-time high as they went back and forth to end the night with “Give It Away”.

The action starts all over again today from 1:30pm Pacific with the likes of Logic, Muse, Jane’s Addiction, Garbage and more all taking the stage and being webcast. Watch the show live on http://www.livelist.com/kaaboo or http://www.kaaboodelmar.com/live.
