True Music Cape Town
Thursday, November 23 from 10:00am-2:00pm Pacific on Boiler Room TV
Boiler Room has made a name for itself by streaming the otherwise un-streamable; in their own words, by creating “windows into scenes and sounds from every corner of the globe.” To date, the live broadcasting platform has streamed sets from underground artists in well over 100 cities around the world. This time, they’ve teamed up with Ballantine’s Scotch Whiskey for a four city tour of Africa that kicks off this Thursday in Cape Town – toss it on while the turkey’s in the oven. Here’s a few of the artists we’re looking forward to:
YoungstaCPT – The True Music series aims to showcase local talent, so YoungstaCPT was probably an obvious choice for the opening edition. The Cape Town emcee wears his hometown pride on his sleeve, and his significance in the city’s underground hip-hop scene is clear even from afar. His discography is also prolific – he has released an impressive 29 mixtapes, along with a series of EPs and singles. Check out one of many music videos below:
Dope Saint Jude – Another Cape Town native, Dope Saint Jude is an independent rapper and producer who also identifies strongly with her hometown. Dope is known for her experimental take on hip-hop, rap, and R&B, and her lyrics and often powerful and political. So far, she’s made her mark on the Cape Town scene with her self-produced debut EP, Reimagine, as well as a series of earlier tracks like “The Golden Ratio.”
K-$ – K-$ is the alias of Kalo Canterbury, a DJ and “internet sensation” that comes from a family of music-makers in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. Kalo’s father was also a DJ, and K-$ sets are full of old-school disco, funk, soul, boogie, and R&B tracks. K-$ is also a big name in Cape Town’s queer music scene, and their True Music set should be a prime portal into the progressive South African party scene.
