Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola! Considering that Evans recently took over the piano chair for the famously busy The Bad Plus, it’s a relief to see his ongoing commitment to his own long-running and vital projects. The Captain Black Big Band features a massive rotating cast of all-star musicians, typically with 10 members performing on a given night. Regulars include such renowned soloists and leaders as Marcus Strickland, Stacy Dillard, David Gibson, Todd Bashore, Tia Fuller, and Conrad Herwig, to name a few. In addition to Evans’ fiery originals, they perform the work of composers ranging from Hoagy Carmichael to Wayne Shorter and Sun Ra. This big band is raucous, adventurous, and made up of such in-demand and prolific musicians that Evans must be commended for bringing them together on one stage.
